The second element of this colon cleanse is the Detox Drink. This is a cleansing recipe that will help your body expel all those toxins that have been causing you problems.
The most important ingredient is Apple Cider Vinegar, a natural detoxifier that gently removes toxins from the body, purifies your blood and builds up your immune system. Note that we do not recommend laxatives or laxative teas like Senna – if you follow the diet and eat enough fiber, you won’t need them.
On this page we’ll share the recipe for the Detox Drink, the times of day that you should drink it, and the role that each ingredient plays in your cleanse.
The Detox Drink recipe
Here’s the recipe for the detox drink. These quantities should last you one whole day, so keep this in mind when you’re shopping for the ingredients. You can prepare the Detox Drink each morning and keep it in the fridge for the rest of the day.
- 1 gallon (4 liters) of water, preferably distilled or at least filtered
- 3 tablespoons of unpasteurized Apple Cider Vinegar
- Juice of 1 Lemon
- 1/2 teaspoon of Cayenne Pepper
Simply mix all the ingredients together and refrigerate. It should only take a few minutes each morning to prepare, then just give it a quick stir before you pour yourself out a drink.
When should you take the Detox Drink?
There’s no particular time of day that you need to take the Detox Drink. Just gulp down a large glass in the morning when you make the recipe, and then try to drink as much as you can during the rest of the day. A gallon is a lot of liquid to drink during a day, so don’t beat yourself up if you don’t manage to finish the entire thing. Just throw away what’s left and make a new batch in the morning.
The ingredients of the Detox Drink
We recommend distilled water for your cleanse, but if you can’t find it or don’t want the inconvenience, filtered water is fine too. Distilled water is water that has been boiled, evaporated and then condensed. In practice, this means that it is completely free of the dissolved minerals that you find in normal water, which makes it an excellent vehicle for absorbing toxins from your body. It typically costs something like $1 per gallon so it won’t break the bank.
If you’d prefer to stick to filtered water, please make sure that your filter removes the fluoride from the water. Fluoride is often added to water supplies to reduce tooth decay, but in sufficient quantities it has been proven to be poisonous. Give your liver a break during the cleanse and try to minimize your fluoride consumption.
Apple cider vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar is a naturally detoxifying product that gently removes toxins from the body and supports your immune system. It is great for breaking down mucus and encouraging the lymphatic system to eliminate waste products. During your colon cleanse your body needs all the help you can give it to expel toxins, so Apple Cider Vinegar is probably the most important part of your Detox Drink.
Buy unpasteurized Apple Cider Vinegar if you can find it. The pasteurization process that most non-organic brands go through actually removes many of the nutrients. Also lift up your bottle of ACV to the light and take a look at it. There should be thin strands within the vinegar – this is the apple pectin, or the fiber from the apples. This extra fiber will help bulk up your stool and promote bowel movements throughout your cleanse. You can also use ACV as a salad dressing, along with olive oil and sea salt.
Many people already drink a daily cleanser of lemon juice and warm water, for very good reason. Lemon juice acts as a mild antiseptic to kill harmful bacteria, stimulates the liver to process more toxins, and assists in the more efficient movement of waste through the colon. Try to use organic lemons in the Detox Drink if you can.
The capsaicin in cayenne pepper helps blood circulation by preventing your blood platelets from sticking together. The smooth flow of blood around the body is an important part of cleansing, as it enables your liver to process toxins more efficiently. Additionally, cayenne breaks up mucus in your intestines and promotes more regular bowel movements.
